Karim Baggili : Douar

© 2006 Acoustic Music Records

When he signed up for the Young Talent Competition at the Open Strings Festival in Osnabrück in the year 2000 and then took the first prize, we knew right off the bat that we had discovered a new talent here.

The music produced by the then 24-year-old Karim Baggili was difficult to describe. A little flamenco here, a few Arabic scales there, and lots of fire and enthusiasm made it hard to paste a label on the music. Nevertheless, everyone hearing the young musician in the finals of the Open Strings competition was fascinated.

Five years have passed in the meantime. Karim Baggili’s music has developed and matured, but has lost none of its fascination. The flamenco technique, the Arabic melodies, it’s still all there and coalesces into a logical unity. And it’s no wonder, since Baggili, born in Belgium of a Jordanian father and a Yugoslavian mother, was in close contact with various cultures ever since his earliest childhood.
