Nicholas Barron Band has been performing together for more than fifteen years under a variety of names but with the same core players — drummer Steve Gillis, keyboardist Vijay Tellis Nayak and bassist Shawn Sommer. In the spring of 2008, Steve and Vijay opened Transient Sound Studios on Chicago’s north side. Candyrat Records owner Rob Poland was looking for the next Nicholas Barron record, and after hearing the band knew that this musical telepathy had to be captured on record. In the Summer of 2008, they recorded the session you now hold in your hands, playing only one or two takes per song.
Live in Transient Sound combines Nicholas’ love of the blues, passion for lyricism, and subtlety of the ballad with the rich audio atmosphere of the live room at Transient Sound. While his undeniable and original voice is showcased front and center, the strength of the recording is in the notable synergy that occurs between the players in the live studio setting. It is clear that these musicians share some history. Look for more exciting work in the years to come, both from Transient Sound and The Nicholas Barron Band.
Funk / Soul
Swimmer, led by singer-songwriter Nicholas Barron, was a popular Chicago band in the late 1990's. The band had an all-star cast of players who now play with Music giants from Mary J. Blige to Beyonce to Justin Timberlake and others. Swimmer's 2 CDs, which make up "The Swimmer Years" were called "The Best of the Year" by Chicago's WXRT radio. These songs came together from playing a legendary weekly gig at The Elbo Room every Thursday where Nicholas and the band would improvise and freestyle. These are basically Live tracks!
Blues / Folk
Nicholas Barron is Chicago music. He sings like those blues cats that used to play on Maxwell Street. He performs and writes a mix of Acoustic Folk, Blues and Soul music ; spiritual, real, and deeply poetic. He plays guitar in a style that is truly his own; at once percussive and highly rhythmic with big beautiful chords and in funky tunings with his original one man band attack.
