Karim Baggili : Douar

Classical / Flamenco (Belgium Import)

The music produced by the then 24-year-old Karim Baggili was difficult to describe. A little flamenco here, a few Arabic scales there, and lots of fire and enthusiasm made it hard to paste a label on the music. Nevertheless, everyone hearing the young musician in the finals of the Open Strings competition was fascinated.

Ashley MacIsaac : Hi, How Are You Today?

Fiddle (Eastern Canada)

Ashley MacIsaac is, in a sense, the musical representative of the pre-millenial generation of Eastern Canada. An ardent traditionalist with a penchant, nevertheless, for experimentation, this 26-year-old Nova Scotian native has been taught to play the fiddle the working-class, pub-stomp Cape Breton way: fast, furious and with phenomenal precision.

Pino Forastiere : Circolare

Solo Guitar (Italy Import)

“Circolare” is a thought of togertherness in the future tense, not only in music: the rhythm of Mediterranean popular dances fuses with certain dissonances, algid at times, coming from European contemporary and minimalist production; South American beat merges into Blues, and all is mixed up in an alchemy. The guitar execution gives an effect of orchestration, thanks to the use of alternative tunings and techniques: all the tracks were recorded live, without overdubbing.

Brendan Power : Tradish

Harmonica (UK Import)

This is a brand new 15 track CD over an hour long. It was recorded over a period of eight years as I toured with the Riverdance show, and afterwards. The length of time it's taken means that some tracks have parts recorded from different years and several different countries. But I have taken a lot of care to make sure it all hangs together.

Jobim's - No More Blues, has filled Joni Mitchell's - Both Sides Now, with new life and casually refined Freddie Hubbard's - Byrdlike, with text.

Raincoat Lake was recorded in July 2005. The critically acclaimed CD features original compositions, a suite composed by Toronto bassist/composer Andrew Downing, and arrangements of music by Kurt Weill, George Gershwin and Cole Porter.
