Biography: Julian Scarcella

Julian Scarcella is a German guitarist, self-taught artist and boundary-crossing composer. From a young age, he dominated national stages, winning top prizes in competitions such as Jugend Musiziert, and later gained global recognition through online contests such as the Six String Theory Competition byLee Ritenour, which earned him a full Berklee scholarship. He studied Jazz Music (Composition/Guitar) at HMTMH in Hanover, completing his Master of Music as top of his class and receiving the Dr. Gerda Rohde Prize.

A true musical fronter, Scarcella’s SAFE collective blends jazz, classic, and metal, earning him multiple composition awards for genre-defying works. He has performed repeatedly at major jazz festivals, including Leverkusen Jazz Days, and has shared the stage with international star acts as a featured artist, such as Wojtek Pilichowski, Claus Hessler, Britta Görtz, Victor Smolski, and many more. As a sought-after session musician, he energizes large audiences with the Stadionsingen Band in Hanover (in front of over 32,500 people annually) and collaborates on musical productions with TFN, Marcia Bittencourt, and musicians from the NDR Radiophilharmonie.

Beyond performance, Scarcella leads as a curator and organizer, shaping events such as the Jazzpicknick Festival and the Weserbergland Guitar Experience, among others. In his Muli-Studios, he produces a wide range of artists—from classical to pop to jazz. As a composer, he works with internationally renowned artists like Abigail Stahlschmidt and Oliver Mascarenhas of the NDR Radiophilharmonie, and contributes to high-profile events such as the Climate Crisis Stop and Listen project by Mehr Demokratie e.V.

His acoustic guitar playing and educational initiatives—through workshops and the book/video workshop Kreativ Loopen—have made him a familiar name at international trade fairs, including the Frankfurter Musikmesse.

I perform a solo percussive fingerstyle arrangement of the beautiful song "Angels" by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers. I've arranged this piece for solo guitar because it has inspired me since childhood and as a big Williams fan, I wanted to create my own interpretation.

For this performance, I used the following equipment:
    • Furch Red Deluxe GC-SR A acoustic guitar
    • Magrabo Strap
    • Martin Tommy Emmanuel signature strings
    • L.R. Baggs Anthem Pickup
    • Cordial Cable
    • Neural DSP Quadcortex (with discreet effects like the Freezer and Shimmer Hall)
    • Roland SY-1000 (with some decent synth effects)
    • Boss OC-3 in Poly Mode (famous for its poly sounds)
    • Ortega Amp 1 Stack
    • Essetti picks

The arrangement also incorporates subtle effects to enhance the sound, including the Freezer from the Quadcortex, shimmer reverb, synth effects from the SY-1000, and the iconic Boss OC-3 poly sound.

Please note that all rights to the original song are owned by Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers. I arranged this piece for solo guitar because it has always moved me deeply, and I hope you enjoy my interpretation!
